NLIU wins international moot at Singapore

A team from National Law institute University (NLIU) won world finals of the prestigious Ian Fletcher International Insolvency Moot, held in Singapore. This is the first time for any Indian team to have won this Moot, which is the most prestigious competition in insolvency law globally.

The team comprising of Aishwarya Srivastava, Udyan Arya, Christina Shaju and Kuhoo Mishra were announced the winners. The NLIU team beat teams from National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, Leiden University, Netherlands, University of British Columbia, Canada, and Queensland University of Technology, Australia among many others.

The moot problem was based on the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross Border Insolvency and saw many leading practitioners and academicians from across the world judging the various rounds of the moot. The exam qualified for the world finals through a memo round. In Singapore, there were 3 preliminary rounds followed by Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and Finals. The moot final was a fantastic display of appellate advocacy before international judges including Justice Steven Chong, Judge of Appeal, Singapore, Chief Justice Cecilia Morris, Southern District of New York, USA and Justice (ret) Arjan Kumar Sikri, Supreme Court, India.

NLIU student Kuhoo Mishra was adjudged as the Best Mooter in the Final Rounds, and she has been selected to observe UNCITRAL proceedings in New York/Vienna.

The moot is organised by INSOL International, the leading professional body of insolvency practitioners, in collaboration with UNCITRAL and International International Insolvency Institute. It is also supported by University of Queensland, Australia.
